"If you came to my home you would see Trinidad reflected in my home."

Jeselle ran a daycare in Trinidad until her sister suggested that she take a vacation to recuperate from health challenges. Jeselle arrived in the US as a tourist in 1998 and settled with her aunt. After consulting with her family, Jeselle decided to explore the educational opportunities in the US.

She has lived in the US for 26 years now, living between Pennsylvania, New York, and California. She's traveled across Europe to countries like Italy, Belgium, and France. Today, Jeselle is a US citizen who resides in the Northeast. She's working toward her doctorate, and serves as a school administrator.

Artifacts

Artifacts are meaningful items shared by participants in each interview. These may include a piece of artwork, a drawing, a key, song lyrics, a Bible or Bible verse, a picture, an item of clothing, or any other object that symbolizes their immigrant journey. Each artifact reflects the emotional and mental state of the participant at various stages of their immigration experience.

I have a framed picture of my sister and brother’s wedding side by side. My sister’s wedding was first and took place in Trinidad. This half is important because it was the beginning of the end.

Picture with Peter and Katie in Italy, the children whom I cared for from infancy. I love this picture! It captured the love that we have for each other.

At least twice per year I look at my old NIS and remember my last few years in Trinidad. I migrated not long after I got the card. so it reminds me of what was.

The towel is the last piece of clothing I brought with me to the US. I just have it in my linen closet but when I look at it I am reminded of home.

I had no intention of getting a US passport. However, I booked a trip to Trinidad in 2009. After I purchased the ticket I noticed my TT passport was expiring so I had to either renew the TT passport or work on US Citizenship.

The bible was given to me by my sister when I got baptized. I brought the bible to me when I migrated to the US. It was comforting to open and see my sister handwriting and highlighted scriptures.
